We tried to make it to a Good Friday service today at the Duomo, but when we got there Simeon just kept asking me where the priest was. Either my information about what time daily masses are was incorrect or out of date, or it was hidden away in a tiny side chapel somewhere. Milan’s cathedral is a gigantic gothic thing; it’s the third largest church in the world, took over four hundred years to build from start to finish, and is very very ornate with about 3500 statues. Unfortunately, it’s currently undergoing restoration, and the entire front of it except for a few massive doors is covered with scaffolding. (That’s why there aren’t any pictures of the façade.)In any case, we had been to the piazza here several times but had never made it inside, so it was a trip well taken. The main aisle is lined with paintings hanging down on either side, and the floor is made of marble designs… As impressive as the interior is, though, nothing quite compared to our trip to the roof terraces! The fee to use the elevator was only moderately more expensive than the stairs, although the line was a lot longer. I’ve never been a person who was afraid of heights, but I’ll admit I was relieved to hit solid ground again when we came down. Simeon was good about holding my hand, thank goodness. It was a weird mix of centuries old, solid building under our feet; and uneven, worn marble, not level walkways, and sketchy looking chicken wire catching anyone who might fall.
